    Automatic Table of contents

Hi! Is there a way to have the table of contents be generated automatically? Thanks

    Shipped Other
    From the Alhora team

Yes! Alhora does the contents-page housekeeping for you 😊 It generates the table of contents from your chapters and updates it as you add, rename or rearrange them. For a PDF, enable Print a contents page in Print layout — page numbers are calculated automatically when you export. It currently appears when your book has more than three chapters included in print.

You weren’t missing an option — that was a bug, and it’s fixed in 1.33.1! 😊 Update and export your PDF again, and the contents will sit after your opening pages, such as the title page, copyright and dedication, and before the foreword, preface or first chapter.

3 lines for a chapter title

line 1- chapter number line 2- whos pov the chapter is from line 3- the chapter name eg- 1 Lila Tuesday

    From the Alhora team

Hey Ana, I added this into the latest version for you released already!

Add “Lila” to the chapter’s Point of view field and “Tuesday” as its title, then switch on Point of view on the chapter page under Style Studio → Chapter opener. Choose number-only numbering and you’ll get exactly that: 1, Lila, Tuesday, each on its own line — including in your exported book!

    Or put simply:

In Write, select the chapter in the Outline, then open Details on the right.

Under Essentials, the Point of view field sits directly below Subheading. Enter “Lila” and press Enter. 😊

It appears when the selected section is a Chapter, rather than front or back matter.

If you think this could work better a different way, drop me an email at [email protected].

Thanks for your suggestion, it was a good one :)

why is the app so useless?

Hi zash, I must admit this seems a bit of a contradiction to your other request on here where you do mention that you could not upload your book at all so I am somewhat doubtful this is a genuine comment. Nevertheless, Alhora simply allows you to reassign content easily to and from the front matter and actual manuscript. Request: how do i indent each paragraph

I was looking for this in Alhora: how do i indent each paragraph What outcome would make this useful?

    Shipped Other
    From the Alhora team

In Alhora you don't indent paragraphs one by one. You set it once and every paragraph follows automatically.

Go to Style Studio → Paragraphs → Indented.

That's it. Alhora indents every paragraph for you, and it's clever about it — it skips the first paragraph of a chapter and the first one after a scene break, just like a printed book.

    Two quick tips:

Even faster: some styles already indent. If you switch to Meridian, Rosewood or Kindred, you'll get indents straight away with nothing to set.
Pressing Tab won't do it — that's a word-processor habit, and Alhora handles indents as part of your book's style instead.

And if you have one chapter that shouldn't indent — a letter or a diary entry, say — open that chapter's settings and untick "Indent the first line of each paragraph." The rest of the book keeps its indents.

    Hope that sorts it!

Hi Emily, by default, your projects always autosaves automatically after every few words you take, so you can be confident that your work is safe. For reassurance, in the top right, there is a ... menu. Save button also exists there :)

    Chapter Titles

Hey James, I wounder if there is a way to name a Chapter which is only to have a picture on it, but I do not want the name to some in the book, …

    Shipped Other Low
    From the Alhora team

Two questions, and they turn out to have one answer each — one that already existed and one that was genuinely broken.

A chapter that shows only a picture, with no name printed: this is already there, and it's called Contents name. Every section has one. Whatever you type in it is what you see in the Contents pane on the left, and it is never printed in the book. So you can call it "Chapter One artwork", find it easily while you're working, and have the page itself print nothing but your picture. Leave the section's own title empty and the page stays bare.

The second one was a real bug, and you found it. When you added an image page, you got a grey placeholder with no way to click it — the only route in was dragging a picture from the Assets panel, and that quietly added a SECOND image block rather than filling the empty one. No wonder it felt broken.

Fixed in 1.28.0: the placeholder is now the button. Click it and you can pick a picture you've already brought into the book, or import a new one on the spot.

Thank you for reporting it. It had been sitting there since image pages shipped.

    Chapter Indents

I have one chapter which is written as a letter to my book subject, I do not want this to have new lines indented. Just all left aligned. I have also tried to put …

Built, and it works exactly the way you described wanting it.

Select the chapter in the Contents pane on the left, and in its settings you'll find a tick called "Indent the first line of each paragraph". Untick it, and that one chapter sits flush left while every other chapter in the book keeps its indents. Your letter chapter can now be a letter.

It works on front and back matter too, so a list, an acknowledgements page or a playlist can refuse indents the same way.

Thank you for describing the workaround you'd tried — putting it all in one paragraph — because that told me straight away that this was a real gap and not a setting you'd missed. It genuinely wasn't there before. It is now.

    Ornament Features

    Shipped Other
    From the Alhora team

You weren't doing anything wrong — the setting you were looking for didn't exist, and the way the app was laid out made it look like it did. Sorry for the time you spent on that.

Here's what was happening. The ornament lives on your style, and a style is one thing your whole book shares. Switching the preview between print and ebook/Kindle only changed what you were looking at, not which edition you were editing — so removing the ornament removed it from both, every time.

Fixed in 1.28.0. In Style Studio, underneath the ornament you've chosen, there's now a row called "Show it in" with two boxes: Printed book, and Ebook. Untick Printed book and leave Ebook ticked, and you get precisely what you asked for — full-page chapter title art in the print edition with no ornament, and the ornament in the ebook and Kindle files.

One tidy detail while I was in there: an ornament the ebook no longer shows is also no longer packed into the EPUB file, so you're not carrying an image no reader will ever see.

    Paragraph break.

    Shipped Editor High
    From the Alhora team

You absolutely are meant to write directly in the editor, and what you're describing already works — you just need the other mode! Look at the top bar for the Blocks / Write toggle and switch to Write. In Write mode, Enter does exactly what you'd expect: it starts a real new paragraph with the proper first-line indent, no plus sign anywhere. Blocks mode is the deliberately structural one, where each element is a card you place on purpose — it's brilliant for arranging images, quotes and scene breaks, but it's not the mode for drafting flowing prose. Try Write mode and I think you'll find it's the editor you were hoping for. Genuinely useful signal that the toggle isn't obvious enough, though, so thank you!
