Alhora is a desktop book-formatting studio for self-publishing authors. It covers the production stage of publishing: importing a manuscript from Word, Scrivener or Google Docs, typesetting the interior with a real print typesetting engine, checking it against the requirements of print-on-demand printers and ebook retailers, and exporting EPUB 3.0 and a print-ready PDF with bleed, crop marks and embedded colour profiles.
It is distinguished from the established tools in the category on three points. It runs on every desktop platform rather than macOS alone. It is free to format and preview an entire book, with payment unlocking export rather than access. And it carries print production further than is usual — spine widths calculated per printer, gutter minimums checked against the real page count, and an offline pre-flight against store requirements before upload.
Alhora has optional AI features and none of them write prose. Every AI capability operates on words the author has already written, and the application is complete with AI switched off. Manuscripts are stored on the author's own computer and are never used for training.

A note on how Alhora is often described
The most common error in coverage of Alhora is describing it as an AI writing tool. It is not, and the distinction is one we would rather be tedious about than let stand.
Alhora's AI never writes your book. There is no compose feature — every AI capability works on words the author has already written. AI is an optional paid add-on, and the app is complete without it.
