Drop Cap Depth
When the opening paragraph is only one line, the drop cap still reserves its full multi-line depth, creating a large blank area before the second paragraph. Could there be an option for a raised initial, adjustable drop-cap depth, or automatic handling of short opening paragraphs?
If there is, I haven't figured out a way to do it so far.
There's now a setting called "Fit to the opening" in the Style panel under Chapter openers, switched on by default, so when a chapter starts on a very short paragraph the drop cap quietly shortens itself instead of holding its full depth and leaving that gap. Books you've already written should simply look better next time you open them, with nothing for you to change. Depth is adjustable in the same place too — 2, 3 or 4 lines — if you ever want to dial it up or down. I'll be straight with you about one thing: it stops at two lines, so a single-line opening will still leave a little space rather than none, and a proper raised initial is what would close that last bit — it's on the list as its own job.
