    Images in World Building

    Allow to insert images in the content of the wiki, like images or charts or tables, etc.

    Shipped, and it was closer than I realised when I first replied.

    I told you images and tables inside the article text weren't supported. That was half wrong: the article had understood pictures and tables for a while — but only if you knew the syntax to type, and nothing anywhere told you that. A feature you can't find is a feature you don't have, so I'm counting that as my mistake rather than yours.

    In 1.28.0 there's a "Put in a picture" button above the article. Click it, choose your image, and it's brought into your world's own folder and written in wherever your cursor was — as its own paragraph, so it never tears the sentence you were in the middle of. The hint beside it now also tells you that rows of pipe-separated cells make a table, which they always did.

    So: images and tables in article bodies, both there, both reachable without knowing any syntax. Your one portrait image per entry is unchanged, sitting at the top as it always has.

    Charts are still the open question, and I meant it when I asked. Timelines, relationships and statistics each pull in a completely different direction, and I'd rather build the one you'd actually use than a generic chart tool that does none of them well.     Update — the gap I described is now closed.

    To recap what I said before: there were ways to get a clean artwork page, but none of them let you also give it a tidy name in the sidebar. That's what was missing, and it's what's now been built.

    Every section has a Contents name. Type "Chapter One artwork" into it and that's what you see in the Contents pane while you work — and it is never printed. The page itself prints whatever its own title says, or nothing at all if you leave that empty. So you get the organised sidebar you wanted and a clean page, at the same time, in the same spot.

    Also fixed in the same release, and related: an image page inserted between chapters used to be a dead grey placeholder you could only fill by dragging an asset onto it (which added a second block). Now you click the placeholder and choose the picture. That was the other half of what made this awkward.

    Subsections are still on the list — not forgotten, just not this release.

    Thanks again for such a clearly described case. "I want it in the sidebar but not in the book" is exactly the sentence that made the shape of this obvious.

    Following up on this one, because part of my earlier answer turned out to be wrong — and in your favour.

    I said there was no way to stop Alhora promoting your Heading 1s into chapters on import. There was: it's a setting called "What starts a new chapter?" that sits next to the import button, with four choices — Auto, Heading 1, Heading 2 and Never. Never brings your manuscript in as a single chapter and leaves every heading as a heading.

    What I got wrong is WHY you might not have found it working. In two places the setting was being quietly ignored: if you imported through the Quick Start wizard when creating a new book, and for every .odt file regardless of how you imported it. Both of those silently fell back to Auto. So depending on your route, you could have chosen Never and watched it split your book into chapters anyway.

    Both are fixed in 1.28.0. The setting is now honoured on every import path and every format.

    And the rest of my earlier answer still stands: if it's happening while you're writing in Alhora rather than on import, click the block, open Turn into, and choose Paragraph. If you want a heading that stays inside a chapter rather than starting a new one, use Heading 2 or Heading 3 — only Heading 1 carries chapter weight.

    Sorry for pointing you at a control that wasn't reliably working. Thanks for asking the question that got it looked at.

    Backlinks and Tags

    Happy to walk you through it!

    Backlinks: while you're writing, type @ and pick a World page. That
    creates the link, and from then on the page keeps a running list of
    everywhere it's been mentioned — you can click straight through to the
    passage. Nothing you link ever shows up in your PDF or EPUB; it's
    private scaffolding.

    Tags: open any World page and add them in the tag field. They're your
    own filing system, so use whatever makes sense to you — #nobility,
    #act-two, #needs-a-name. The reader view shows them under the title.

    The nice part is you don't have to plan any of it. Link as you go and
    the web builds itself.

    Conetnts Page

    Your instinct was right — it's already in there!

    Open Print settings and you'll see a "Contents page" section with a
    "Print a contents page" tick. Turn it off and it stays out of your
    print file entirely.

    Small thing worth knowing: Alhora only prints one for books with more
    than three chapters, on the grounds that a three-chapter book doesn't
    really need an index of itself.

    It arrived in 1.24.0 and we never actually told anyone, which is on us.

    Good news — this one already exists, it was just hiding from you!
    In Style Studio, open your style and you'll find Heading 2 alignment
    and Heading 3 alignment sitting alongside the chapter opener controls.
    Set H2 to centred and every POV heading in the book follows.
    And if you ever want just one heading to break ranks, select it in the
    editor and the block's own alignment control will let you nudge that one
    without touching the rest.
    One tip: make the change on your own style rather than a built-in one,
    so it stays put. Sorry it wasn't easier to find — noted.

    Update on this one — and a happy one. It shipped, in 1.24.0!

    Book details → Metadata → Cover artwork now has an Ebook cover slot
    sitting right next to your front cover. Drop your ebook cover in there
    and the EPUB uses it; leave it empty and it keeps using your front
    cover exactly as before. Your printed wrap and 3D render don't change
    either way.

    Apologies for leaving this sat on the roadmap when it was already
    in your hands. Thanks for asking for it.

    Yes, you can do this with a Scene break, without creating a new chapter.
    In Prose, place your cursor in the paragraph before the break and choose Insert scene break from the toolbar. On smaller windows, it may be under More formatting. In Blocks, choose + → Scene break.
    To choose the decorative icon in the installed app, open Style Studio → Customise this style → Scene breaks → Ornament. If you cannot find those controls, let us know your device and Alhora version so we can point you to the right place.

    There are already size options for decorative breaks in the installed app, although they can be easy to miss!
    For a divider between scenes, go to Style Studio → Customise this style → Scene breaks, select an Ornament, then choose its Size. For the decoration beneath a chapter heading, look under Chapter openings → Ornament → Size.
    Both offer Small, Standard, Large and Extra large. If you mean the surrounding space or a plain text symbol instead, let us know. Also, is it looking too small while you write, in the preview, or in your exported book?

    You can have a book published as a young author, with help from a parent or guardian.
    Alhora helps prepare your book’s layout and create ebook or print files. Publishing those files through a retailer is a separate step. For example, Amazon KDP allows a parent or guardian to open the publishing account and publish a minor’s book. KDP’s account requirements
    Alhora’s own terms currently require account holders to be at least 16, so please ask a parent or guardian to contact us before setting up an account. We can clarify the permitted way forward and help explain the publishing steps.

    Hi Sierra, this bug is now resolved. It was due to a specific file type not being allowed in epubs. We now convert every image into acceptable epub images before send off. So should be fixed now :)
